PTE Describe Image and Retell Lecture: speak clearly without rigid templates
Quick answer

Describe Image needs a clear overview plus the most important visual relationships; Retell Lecture needs the speaker's main idea and connected supporting points. Use a flexible four-part frame—topic, overview, two key details, conclusion—rather than a memorised script. Prepare keywords, speak continuously for the available time and prioritise accurate meaning over listing everything.

The shared skill

Both tasks ask you to transform input into an organised spoken summary. Pearson evaluates task-relevant content as well as oral delivery. Your response should sound like an explanation, not a template with a few nouns inserted.

Visual guide · The shared skill

Describe Image in four moves

  • Name the visual and topic.
  • Give the dominant trend, contrast or spatial pattern.
  • Select two details that prove the overview.
  • Close with the main implication or overall picture.

Retell Lecture notes

Write the topic at the top, then capture main point, two supports and any clear conclusion. Use arrows and abbreviations. Do not attempt a transcript; missing the next idea while writing the previous sentence is worse than having fewer notes.

How to use preparation time

For an image, scan title, axes, extremes and relationship. For a lecture, predict the domain from any visual, then listen for definition, cause, contrast, example and conclusion signals.

Fluency practice

  • Record a 20-second overview before adding detail.
  • Practise transitions that express a real relationship.
  • Replace fillers with a short silent pause.
  • Finish the thought you are on instead of racing into a new point.

Template traps

  • Describing every number.
  • Claiming a trend the image does not show.
  • Repeating lecture keywords without relationships.
  • Using a long generic opening.
  • Speaking until the timer cuts off mid-sentence.

Frequently asked questions

Should I memorise a PTE Describe Image template?

Memorise a flexible decision sequence, not a long script. The words must match the actual visual.

Do I need to mention every number?

No. Give an overview and select the strongest evidence.

Can I take notes in Retell Lecture?

Yes. Pearson advises using the erasable noteboard. Capture keywords and relationships rather than full sentences.

What if I miss part of the lecture?

Organise the main idea and supporting points you understood accurately. Do not invent missing content.
