IELTS Writing Task 2: a band-7 structure that works
IELTS specialists — MUIC & Chulalongkorn University alumni, IELTS Speaking Band 9, IDP-certified.
A reliable Band 7 Task 2 essay uses four paragraphs: an introduction that paraphrases the question and states a clear position, two body paragraphs that each develop one idea with an example, and a conclusion that restates the position. Aim for 260–290 words, a clear position throughout, and a range of accurate complex sentences.
The four-paragraph structure
- Introduction: paraphrase the question + state your position/overview.
- Body 1: topic sentence → explain → example → link back to the question.
- Body 2: a second, different main idea, developed the same way.
- Conclusion: restate your position; add no new ideas.
What each criterion rewards
Task Response: you answer all parts of the question with a clear, consistent position and developed ideas. Going under 250 words is penalised.
Coherence & Cohesion: logical paragraphs, clear topic sentences and varied linking — without over-using 'Firstly, Secondly, Finally'.
Lexical Resource: precise, less-common vocabulary and collocations used naturally; spelling and word-form accuracy.
Grammatical Range & Accuracy: a mix of complex structures (conditionals, relative clauses) with frequent error-free sentences.
Common ways people get stuck at 6
- An unclear or shifting position across the essay.
- Ideas that are listed but not developed with a reason and example.
- Memorised phrases that don't fit the question.
- Only simple sentences, or complex sentences riddled with errors.
Frequently asked questions
How many words should IELTS Task 2 be?
At least 250. Aim for 260–290 — long enough to develop two ideas, short enough to stay accurate in the time.
Is a five-paragraph essay better?
Not necessarily. Two well-developed body paragraphs usually score higher than three thin ones.
Do I need formal academic vocabulary?
You need precise, appropriate vocabulary. Natural, accurate word choice beats forced 'big words' that don't fit.
