PTE Academic test format, scores and preparation: the 2026 guide
Quick answer

PTE Academic is a computer-based four-skills English test scored from 10 to 90. It has three parts—Speaking & Writing, Reading and Listening—and uses automated scoring, with some complex responses also reviewed by a human expert. Pearson says results are typically available within 48 hours. Prepare by learning each task's scoring traits, recording timed responses and reviewing errors by skill instead of memorising scripts.

What PTE Academic measures

PTE Academic measures speaking, writing, reading and listening for study, professional registration and selected visa routes. Many items are integrated-skills tasks, so one response can contribute to more than one communicative-skill score.

Always check the exact test and minimum score required by your university, professional body or immigration authority. Acceptance and cut scores belong to those organisations, not to a conversion table.

The current PTE Academic structure

The test is completed on a computer in one sitting and is organised into Speaking & Writing, Reading and Listening. The mix includes tasks such as Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image, Summarize Written Text, Essay, Reading Fill in the Blanks and Write from Dictation.

Task instructions and scoring rules matter as much as general English. For example, a fluent answer can still lose heavily if it misses required content or violates a form rule.

How PTE scoring works

Your overall and four communicative-skill scores run from 10 to 90. Objective items are marked right or wrong, while complex speaking and writing responses use multiple traits such as content, form, pronunciation, oral fluency, grammar and vocabulary. Pearson states that some complex responses also receive human-expert review before the final score.

The overall score is not a simple average of the four skill scores. Integrated tasks and different item weightings mean that a weakness in one high-impact task can affect several reported skills.

PTE score compared with IELTS Academic

Pearson updated its concordance in July 2025. The current minimum PTE thresholds shown by Pearson include 47 for IELTS 6.0, 55 for 6.5, 63 for 7.0, 71 for 7.5 and 79 for 8.0.

Treat concordance as a research comparison, not an admissions guarantee. Check the receiving institution or visa programme because it may set minimum overall and individual-skill scores.

A preparation plan that transfers to the real test

  • Take a diagnostic across all three parts and record an accuracy baseline by task type.
  • Learn what each item scores before trying to answer faster.
  • Practise microphone tasks with natural pace, clear phrasing and complete content.
  • Build accuracy in integrated tasks such as Repeat Sentence and Write from Dictation.
  • Complete timed mixed sets, then rewrite or re-record the weakest response.
  • Use a full mock only after individual task accuracy becomes stable.

Common mistakes

  • Using a rigid memorised template that does not answer the prompt.
  • Speaking too quickly and sacrificing intelligibility.
  • Ignoring form requirements and word limits.
  • Practising only favourite tasks instead of high-impact weaknesses.
  • Using an old PTE-to-IELTS table after the July 2025 update.

How to prepare for PTE Academic

  1. 1
    Measure your baseline

Complete a mixed diagnostic and record accuracy by item type and communicative skill.

  2. 2
    Learn the scoring traits

Know whether each task rewards correctness, content, form, fluency, pronunciation or several traits together.

  3. 3
    Fix the highest-impact weakness

Practise one weak task in short loops, reviewing every omission and form error.

  4. 4
    Combine skills under time

Move to timed mixed sets only after your task-level accuracy becomes consistent.

  5. 5
    Confirm with a mock

Use a full simulation to check stamina, microphone technique and score stability.
