IELTS results in Thailand: when they arrive, 2-year validity, One Skill Retake and remarks
Quick answer

Every IELTS test in Thailand is now on computer, and results usually arrive in one to two days (IDP says to allow up to five); paper results used to take 13 days. The IELTS partners recommend using a result as evidence of your English for up to two years, and most organisations follow that, though each sets its own rule. If one skill let you down, One Skill Retake lets you resit just that skill once, within 60 days of a computer test, for about 5,000 THB (IDP's fee table lists 5,150 THB). If you think a score is wrong, request a remark — an Enquiry on Results — within six weeks of the test; official Thai pages list fees of about 4,000–4,600 THB, refunded if your score goes up.

When do IELTS results come out in Thailand?

Because every IELTS test in Thailand has been delivered on computer since 22 March 2026, results are fast. The British Council says IELTS on computer results arrive in one to two days, ielts.org says most computer results are now issued within two days, and IDP Thailand says results are released one to five days after the test.

You see your result online first — in the British Council Test Taker Portal or your IDP account — before any Test Report Form reaches you.

  • IELTS on computer (Academic, General Training and UKVI): usually 1–2 days; IDP allows up to 5
  • IELTS One Skill Retake: within 3–5 days (ielts.org)
  • IELTS for UKVI Life Skills: up to 9 days (British Council)
  • IELTS on paper: 13 days — no longer offered in Thailand since 22 March 2026

Your Test Report Form (TRF)

Since 1 January 2025 the British Council in Thailand has issued an electronic Test Report Form by default, which you can download from the Test Taker Portal one to two days after the test; a hard copy is available on request. It sends your result to up to five institutions free of charge and charges 500 THB plus courier for each extra copy, which takes about five to seven days to process.

IDP Thailand sends the Test Report Form by post or lets you collect it at the centre, and offers a digital copy online. The British Council notes that institutions need original Test Report Forms — photocopies are not accepted — which is why test centres send results to them directly.

How long are IELTS results valid?

The two-year limit is a recommendation rather than a fixed expiry date. The IELTS partners recommend that a result demonstrates your English for a maximum of two years, and that a Test Report Form older than that should only be accepted with proof that you have kept up or improved your English. In practice, the British Council says organisations will usually not accept results more than two years old.

Each organisation sets its own rule, and immigration programmes can differ — IDP notes, for example, that some Australian skilled-migration applications accept results up to three years old. Always check the receiving organisation's current requirement before relying on an older result.

One Skill Retake: resit one skill, not the whole test

If you missed your target in just one skill, IELTS One Skill Retake lets you retake Listening, Reading, Writing or Speaking without repeating the other three. The retake has the same format and timing as that skill in the full test, and you receive a new Test Report Form showing the new score alongside your three original scores. You can choose to use either the original or the new result.

  • Eligibility: your full test must have been IELTS on computer — the British Council also offers it after IELTS for UKVI on computer — at a centre that offers One Skill Retake.
  • Deadline: sit the retake within 60 days of your original test.
  • Limit: one retake per original test, of one skill only.
  • ID: bring the same valid ID you used for the original test — an expired document is not accepted.
  • Fee: IDP Thailand's fee table lists 5,150 THB (5,400 THB for UKVI), while its separate One Skill Retake page shows 4,940 THB, so confirm the price in your test-taker account.
  • Acceptance: not every organisation accepts One Skill Retake — check with your university, employer or visa office before you book.
  • Validity: the new Test Report Form is dated from your original test, so the two-year clock does not restart.

Remarks: how an Enquiry on Results works

If a score looks wrong, you can ask for your test to be re-marked by senior examiners. This is called an Enquiry on Results (EOR).

  • Deadline: apply within six weeks of your test date.
  • Sections: choose one or more of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking from the same test.
  • How: for computer tests you apply and pay online — in the British Council Test Taker Portal or your IDP account.
  • Fee: about 4,000–4,600 THB at the time of writing — the British Council's results page lists THB 4,000 and IDP's remark page lists THB 4,600 (THB 4,400 for IELTS for UKVI). Check the fee shown before you pay.
  • Refund: the fee is refunded if your score goes up.
  • Timing: the outcome can arrive the same day or take up to 21 days, depending on how many sections you send.
  • Limits: you cannot see your marked test or get written feedback on it.

Retake, remark or One Skill Retake? How to decide

  • One skill is half a band short and you know why — you ran out of time in Reading or froze in Speaking: One Skill Retake within 60 days, after targeted practice.
  • One Writing or Speaking score is far out of line with your other skills and your practice results: consider a remark within six weeks.
  • Two or more skills are short: book a full test only when timed practice shows every skill at your target.
  • Your deadline is close: results take one to two days and a remark up to 21 days, so plan backwards from the date you must submit.

Use the waiting time to prepare for a second attempt

Whatever you decide, practise the exact skill that let you down. Free timed Listening and Reading sets and criterion feedback on Writing and Speaking at engforedu.com/journey show your band moving week by week, and if Speaking is the problem, daily out-loud practice with the free speaking game at engforedu.com/pine-speak builds fluency before you face the examiner again. Retake only when your practice scores are consistently at your target.

What to do after you receive your IELTS result

  1. 1
Check every skill against your target

Compare each skill band, not just the overall score, with your university, employer or visa requirement.

  2. 2
    Decide within the deadlines

Remarks must be requested within six weeks; One Skill Retake must be taken within 60 days.

  3. 3
    Confirm acceptance

Check that your organisation accepts One Skill Retake before you book it.

  4. 4
    Practise the weak skill

Train it with timed, marked practice at engforedu.com/journey before any retake.

  5. 5
    Send your result

Ask the test centre to send your Test Report Form to institutions directly.
