CLB scores for Canada immigration: how language results are used

Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) are Canada's common scale for describing English ability. Your testing organisation gives a score in each skill; IRCC then maps Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking separately to CLB for the immigration programme. There is no safe universal average. Use the current IRCC table, identify the minimum skill that limits eligibility or points, and build your study plan around that bottleneck.
CLB is a benchmark, not another exam
You do not normally book a test called CLB for Express Entry. You take an accepted language test, then use IRCC's table to see the CLB equivalent for each ability.

Why four separate skills matter
A high overall impression cannot compensate automatically for a skill below the programme threshold. Write down four rows—Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking—with your test score, CLB equivalent and target gap.
How to use the official table
- Select the exact test: CELPIP-General, IELTS General Training or PTE Core.
- Read the conversion for each skill separately.
- Check the immigration programme's minimum and points rules.
- Save the page date and recheck before submitting your profile.
Turn a CLB target into weekly practice
Rank the four gaps from largest to smallest. Give about half of focused practice time to the limiting skill, one quarter to the next weakness and the rest to maintenance. Retest with the same task type each week so the trend is comparable.
Do not confuse concordance with eligibility
A provider's research comparison, a tutor's chart and an online calculator may help explain results, but IRCC's current table and the immigration programme rules decide how a result is used. Always return to the primary source before paying or submitting.

Frequently asked questions
What is CLB?
CLB is the Canadian Language Benchmarks scale used to describe English ability across Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.
Is CLB an English test?
For Express Entry, applicants submit an accepted test result and IRCC maps each skill score to CLB. CLB itself is the benchmark scale.
Can I average my four CLB scores?
Do not assume an average is accepted. Immigration programmes use skill results and programme-specific rules, so check each ability separately.
Where is the official score conversion?
Use IRCC's language-test page for Express Entry and select your exact test.
